When we think of Rihanna style, the first word that comes to mind is fearless.

The singer isn’t afraid to take some major risks on and off the red carpet. So it’s no surprise the CFDA will be celebrating her creative style choices by honoring her with the 2014 Fashion Icon Award.

Rihanna is set to receive Fashion Icon of the Year Award for being the most exciting style ambassador in recent memory‘ , following the footsteps of style icons Kate Moss and Lady Gaga.

In the past year, the superstar has proved her love for bold statement-making looks. Nowadays, every design house on the planet wants to dress her. Her red custom Azzedine Alaïa gown, worn the 2013 Grammy’s, is still one of the most talked about best dressed moments in the PEOPLE Style Watch offices. Next, she introduced us to the long open dress, at the Chanel Haute Couture fashion show in Paris last July. At the American Music Awards in November, she not only dared to bare in a Jean Paul Gaultier two-piece ensemble. She took it to the next level in the hair department sporting a doobie wrap.

For the Roc Nation pre-Grammy brunch in January, Rihanna selected a long-sleeve striped blouse and coordinating striped skirt with a thigh-high split, both from Altuzarra. Probably one of her most glam moments was at the Clive Davis annual Grammy party when she appeared in a draped yellow satin Alexandre Vauthier gown featuring a plunging neckline and dramatic slit.

The 26-year-old, who is the current star of Balmain’s spring 2014 campaign, will be presented with the honor, on June 2, at Lincoln Center in New York City.

It’s clear to see how the last year has been a landmark one for Rihanna style.

Over the last 12 months Rihanna has not only established herself as a fashion force, but has helped pave the way for others as well.  Most recently she has become also a good friend of Karl Lagerfeld, who flew her to Paris and Dallas to sit front-row at Chanel’s recent fashion shows.

Rihanna style, is an award winning being equal parts high-fashion and street wear. She is mixing couture items with cutting-edge T-shirts and sneakers.

The man behind it, Rihanna‘s stylist Mel Ottenberg, is a widely-revered figure in the fashion industry who has worked with magazines including Details, Purple and Vogue Hommes International. Designer Selman had also gained enough notoriety through his work with Rihanna. In 2013 he launched his namesake collection at New York Fashion Week, coverage of which was loaded with mention of his work for the pop star.

Last April, she turned up to a Lakers game wearing sweatpants and a tank top by London brand KTZ, which she paired with white pointed stilettos and a dog collar necklace.

Serving up something a little more refined, this month she appeared at the Comme des Garcons Fall 2014 show in a fur stole emblazoned with the word ‘Fear’

Both outfits are indicative of Rihanna style of which she told Vogue in 2011:

‘When I am putting looks together, I dare myself to make something work. I always look for the most interesting silhouette or something that’s a little off, but I have to figure it out. I have to make it me. I think that’s the thrill in fashion.’

Rihanna style has become such a boom that in 2013, English high street label River Island linked up with the pop star for two limited-edition collections of her own design.

A designer enthusiast, Rihanna has worn everything from Balmain to Betsey Johnson, has been spotted at shows for Stella McCartney, Chanel and Givenchy. She has also designed collections for famous brands such as Emporio Armani and posed for Vogue magazine more than once.

Moving forward, Rihanna has even expressed interest in launching her own fashion label:

“It’s not all down to my voice,” the singer told Vogue last month. “There’s people with way more talent than I when it comes to singing; bigger voices. But people want to know who you are.

Fashion is a clear indication, a way to express your attitude, your mood.”
