The invitation to Dolce Gabbana Fall/Winter 2014 show called us, and their storytelling didn’t disappoint for a moment. From the minute the curtains parted and we saw an enchanted forest with one huge tree growing out of the floor into a misty swirl of snow, we knew we were in for some fun.
There are certain collections that can be relied upon to lift the spirits. “Once upon a time in Sicily” Dolce Gabbana fall winter collection was among them and never more so than this season.
Like storybook heroines – from Little Red Riding Hood to Cinderella and from Snow White lost in the forest to Lara in Dr Zhivago – models stepped out in sweet tailored swing coats appliqued with foxes, squirrels, owls and swans – all with jeweled eyes – and flower embroideries, the most intricate gold jacquard studded with more crystal and ruched chiffon dresses in lovely shades of amethyst and ruby with peasant necklines, puffed sleeves and laced, corseted waists.
The colection was quintessential Dolce Gabbana on finest and most magical form!
Domenico Dolce, son of a Sicilian tailor and fashion graduate, and Stefano Gabbana, originally trained as a graphic designer, met in 1980 while both working for the designer Giorgio Correggiari in Milan. The inventive pair showed the label’s first collection in 1986 and have been expanding on their formula of sexy, showy outfits backed up by clever tailoring and flattering fits ever since.
Their runway shows are highly-produced affairs and always a highlight of the Milan schedule. Their formula of exciting designs and impeccable marketing, their pioneering of the ‘celebrity front row’ approach and captivating ad campaigns have resulted in the brand now including knits, swimwear, fragrance, cosmetics, accessories, menswear and a junior line.
On the penultimate day of Milan Fashion Week, a good story was just what we needed and David Gandy, Monica Belluci, Eva Herzigova in the front row ensured that. No matter the narrative, the emphasis here is all upon beautiful people.
Let’s enjoy the absolutely fabulous autumn/winter collection 2014:
